While it didn't seem like a huge deal at the moment, Montgomery's solo shot in the seventh inning put the White Sox up by three and wound up being the difference in this game. That was his 11th homer of the season and left the park in a hurry with a 110 mph exit velocity. His batting average sits at a lowly .230, but those home runs still make him a fantasy asset.
Ryne Nelson struck out eight batters and pitched seven strong innings with just three runs allowed in a no-decision against the Rangers.
Nelson carried a shutout into the fifth inning before serving up a three-run homer to Jake Burger, which was his lone mistake in this one, and nearly was enough to saddle him with the loss. He didn't hand out a free pass and allowed just four hits over seven strong frames. He'll face the Giants in his next start on Tuesday.
Kumar Rocker pitched five scoreless innings with three hits and four walks in a no-decision against the Diamondbacks.
Rocker was effectively wild in this one, walking four batters while needing 97 pitches (59 strikes) to complete five frames. He finished with only three strikeouts. The 26-year-old former top pitching prospect has worked beyond the fifth inning only twice in eight starts this season and has yet to top six strikeouts in any of those outings. He's not a recommended fantasy option when he faces the Rockies at Coors Field on Tuesday.

Sewald was summoned to protect a two-run lead after Arizona rallied to pull ahead in the top of the frame and was unable to convert the save. He got into trouble when Ezequiel Duran smacked an RBI double with two outs in the frame before Jake Burger followed a couple batters later with a game-tying single that chased him from the contest. He was stuck with a loss on top of the blown save when Juan Morillo immediately surrendered a walk-off single to Danny Jansen.

He was pulled after coughing up a two-run single to Ildemaro Vargas. Fortunately, the Rangers managed to rally in the bottom of the ninth to take him off the hook for the loss.

Lugo hasn't missed bats all season and here, it forced him into too many difficult innings. In fact, he didn't work a single one-two-three frame all night. Generating just five swings-and-misses while allowed 13 hard-hit balls is a recipe for disaster and it's a marvel nearly got through this outing with only three runs on his ledger before a two-out, two-run double by Jarred Kelenic of all people brought home the go-ahead runs for the White Sox. Lugo still has a 3.76 ERA on the season, but the regression monster has him in sight. He's set for a two-start week coming up against the Red Sox and Mariners with both starts at home.
Bobby Witt Jr. went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run and two walks, extending his hot streak with four home runs in his last six games and a .306 batting average.
After struggling to find his power over the first month of the season, Witt Jr. has flipped the switch of late. His two-run, ninth inning home run that pulled the Royals within one run here was his fourth long ball in his last six games. Zooming out a bit further, all seven of his home runs this season have come since April 26th. He's also hit safely in 22 of his last 23 games and is suddenly sporting an elite .306 batting average and .884 OPS on the season.
Noah Schultz struggled in a no-decision against the Royals, allowing three runs on two hits with five walks and three strikeouts over 4 1/3 innings, falling apart in the fourth inning.
Schultz completely fell apart in the fourth inning here. He faced the minimum through three and seemed to put the blow-up in his last start behind him. Then, he walked three straight hitters to start the fourth and all three wound up coming around to score. He walked another hitter with one out in the fifth and Royals' manager Matt Quatraro didn't let him face Bobby Witt Jr. for a third time. Overall, he threw a first pitch strike to just six of the 19 hitters he faced and only threw half of his total pitches for strikes. It's impossible to be effective with command that poor and it will be a tough call as to whether or not we can trust Schultz ahead of a two-start week against the Mariners and Giants.

Varland should be the primary closer going forward, but manager John Schneider isn't always saving him for just the ninth.

Drake Baldwin hit his 11th home run of the season off Cubs pitcher Shota Imanaga, continuing his strong performance against left-handed pitchers.
It's Baldwin's fifth homer off a lefty this season. A left-handed hitter, he's batting .323/.413/.585 versus southpaws, compared to .278/.355/.481 against righties. He was also slightly better against lefties than righties last year, too. The homer tonight actually came on the lowest EV of his three balls in play. He hit that one 99 mph and had 103- and 106-mph lineouts.
JR Ritchie pitched 4 1/3 innings against the Cubs, allowing one run on 83 pitches while significantly increasing his slider usage.
Ritchie departed with a 1-0 lead in the fifth after allowing a leadoff single and then a walk with one out. Tyler Kinley replaced him and immediately gave up a game-tying single. Ritchie, of course, was ineligible for the win anyway, since he didn't finish five. Ritchie really upped his slider usage tonight, using it 20 times int he 83-pitch outing. That's four times as often as he'd used it previously this season. He got just one whiff with it, but all four times it was put in play produced soft contact. Through four starts, Ritchie is 1-0 with a 3.32 ERA and a 17/15 K/BB in 21 2/3 innings. He's due for starts against the Marlins and Nationals next week, making him an intriguing streaming option.
Raisel Iglesias recorded a hitless ninth inning for his eighth save against the Cubs.
Iglesias walked Michael Busch to start the ninth, but Michael Conforto grounded into a double play on the first pitch he saw and Pete Crow-Armstrong popped up the next. Iglesias will probably be down on Wednesday after earning a save for a second straight day. Robert Suarez pitched tonight (and wound up with the win), but since he had Tuesday off, he could close Wednesday.
Shota Imanaga pitched well with 7+ innings and 6 strikeouts but took a loss to the Braves after a defensive error and bullpen struggles.
That's a tough loss. Imanaga allowed one run through seven before jamming Michael Harris II to begin the eighth. Nico Hoerner fielded the weak grounder but tried a glove flip that went way over Michael Busch's head. It should have been an error -- Hoerner had time to throw it normally -- but it was ruled a single. Imanaga was pulled, and Phil Maton came in to give up a single, a double and a homer. Imanaga struck out six and walked none, but he dropped to 4-3 with a 2.32 ERA. He'll face the Brewers on Monday.
Mauricio Dubon hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning to help the Braves defeat the Cubs 4-1 on Wednesday.
The Braves scored three runs in the eighth on singles from Michael Harris II and Ha-Seong Kim, a go-ahead double from Mike Yastrzemski off the bench (on which Kim was thrown out at home) and then a two-run homer from Dubon that took away any ninth-inning drama. Dubon's homer was his third. He's really cooled off at the plate after a great start -- he came into the night hitting .209/.294/.297 in his previous 25 games -- but the Braves are still looking at him as a regular with Kim back, which should mean plenty of starts in left field and at shortstop. Things will get a little more complicated once Ronald Acuna Jr. returns.
Ryan O'Hearn went 2-for-4 with a home run and two runs scored in the Pirates' loss to the Rockies, extending his strong season with a .366 OBP.
O'Hearn's homer was his sixth of the season, a sixth-inning solo shot off Antonio Senzatela. Pittsburgh entered the day with the third-highest team OBP in the league, and O'Hearn's .366 clip has certainly helped. He's now started against six of the 10 lefties the Pirates have faced this season.
TJ Rumfield went 3-for-4 with a solo homer and two runs scored as the Rockies defeated the Pirates 10-4.
Rumfield's homer was his sixth of the season and gave Colorado a 7-4 lead in the eighth. He's yet to tear the cover off the ball this year but continues to hit fourth or fifth most days. The Rockies have one more game in Pittsburgh before returning to Coors for a six-game home stand.
Antonio Senzatela earned his third win of the season pitching three innings out of the bullpen against Pittsburgh, showcasing strong performance with a 1.32 ERA and adjusted pitch mix.
He came in after veteran starter Jose Quintana only made it through four frames. Senzatela overhauled his pitch mix this season, decreasing his four-seamer reliance while his cutter usage spikes. He's also throwing more sinkers in his transition to the bullpen, and he now has a 1.32 ERA with a WHIP well under 1. He also has two saves this season, but every one of his appearances has been for five outs or more, so he isn't yet being used like a traditional closer.
Mitch Keller took a loss against Colorado, allowing six earned runs on seven hits over 5 2/3 innings with three strikeouts.
Keller struck out three and walked just one. He was perfect through four before a six-run outburst in the fifth, including a three-run homer off the bat of Mickey Moniak. The 30-year-old righty entered this start with a 2.87 ERA, but all his estimators suggested nothing much had changed. His next start is scheduled to come on the road in St. Louis.
Jose Quintana pitched four innings against the Pirates, allowing three runs on five hits and three walks with only two strikeouts, continuing a trend of declining strikeout rates in his age-37 season.
Quintana only struck out two in the outing, and his K% is down to a career-worst in his age-37 campaign. The lack of Ks plus pitching half his games in Coors makes him tough to roster outside the deepest of fantasy formats. His next start lines up at home versus the Rangers.

The Rockies have one more game in Pittsburgh before returning to Coors for a six-game home stand.

Reid Detmers allowed four runs in 5 2/3 innings in a loss to the Guardians, with the Angels dropping to 2-7 in his starts and trade speculation emerging.
Detmers gave up a leadoff homer to Angel Martinez in the bottom of the first and later fueled a couple of rallies with a pair of walks and a HBP. It's not a horrible outing, but it's just not enough for the Angels, who dropped to 2-7 in his starts. At this rate, he might finally get traded this summer. His 53/17 K/BB in 49 1/3 innings is pretty solid, and there are surely a few teams that would like to see if they could get more from him than his current 4.38 ERA. He'll face the A's next time out.
Cade Smith recorded his 13th save by striking out the side in the ninth inning against the Angels and has been performing well recently with 14 strikeouts and no walks over his last seven outings.
Smith was a little shaky early on this season, but he seems to have really settled in of late. In his last seven outings, he's fanned 14 and walked none over 7 2/3 innings.
Parker Messick delivered a strong pitching performance with two runs allowed through 6 2/3 innings and seven strikeouts in a victory over the Angels.
Facing right-handers exclusively today, the left-handed Messick allowed only four hits on an average exit velocity against of 81.8 mph. He's eighth in the majors with 58 strikeouts, 12th with a 0.99 WHIP and 15th with a 2.35 ERA. His next start is likely to come Tuesday in Detroit.
Angel Martinez homered in his second straight game and stole two bases in the Guardians' 4-2 win over the Angels.
He also stole two bases, bringing his season total to eight. Martinez was leading off on a rare day off for Steven Kwan today. There's a good argument for the Guardians making a more permanent switch in the leadoff spot with Kwan hitting just .206/.311/.265, but Martinez probably isn't the right man for the job; he's walked only five times in 143 plate appearances this season and has a .281 career OBP (.300 this season). Still, it'd make Martinez a pretty attractive option in shallow leagues if he could convince the Guardians to bat him first or second regularly. He has started eighth of the team's last 10 games.

Best-case scenario for a meniscus tear is typically 4-6 weeks, but it can be considerably longer, depending on how Alvarez and doctors want to address it surgically. Alvarez was hitting .241/.317/.393 with four homers, all of which came in his first 14 games of the season. He's had just a .539 OPS in his last 23 games. The switch to Luis Torrens as a starting catcher won't hurt the Mets, but they definitely will feel Alvarez's absence when Torrens needs a day off and they have to turn to Hayden Senger.

Gonzalez had surgery on his left shoulder at the beginning of March and was confident at the time that he would return by the end of May. We still don't have any update on his timeline, but it's nice to see him on the field and doing baseball activities. Coming back in the next two weeks feels unlikely, but perhaps Gonzalez could return in early June, which would be a boost to the Red Sox lineup, particularly against lefties, where he would likely start over Marcelo Mayer. Gonzalez hit .305/.343/.483 with nine home runs and six steals in 341 plate appearances last year.
Red Sox manager Chad Tracy reports that Roman Anthony is making slow but steady progress in his recovery from a wrist injury sustained against the Tigers, with focus on regaining grip strength before returning to play.
Anthony injured the top of his hand on a swing against the Tigers last Monday and was placed on the 10-day IL on Thursday. The Red Sox had hoped he would return when first eligible, but that will not be the case. The 22-year-old still hasn't swung a bat as the Red Sox work on the strength in his hand. "Eventually, we'll get to strong gripping," said Tracy. "That's the biggest thing for him: when do we get to feel like the grip strength is there? When we're in there, we're in a better spot." It does feel like his recovery could speed up considerably once his hand is strong enough to grip a bat again. We just don't know how long that first step is going to take.
Garrett Crochet is progressing well in his recovery from shoulder fatigue and inflammation, having completed long toss and working toward a return by early June.
"We continue to progress well there," said Red Sox manager Chad Tracy. Crochet has been sidelined with shoulder fatigue and inflammation since April 29th, but there is no structural damage in his shoulder. The Red Sox will need to see the left-hander throw multiple times off a mound before he moves to facing hitters. He would then need at least one rehab start before rejoining the Red Sox, but he could return by the early part of June if all goes well.
Patrick Sandoval is progressing through his recovery from biceps tightness and is expected to return to throwing by the end of the week, with potential to face hitters next week.
Sandoval spent all offseason continuing his recovery from last year's Tommy John surgery and made two rehab starts at Triple-A in April before being sidelined with biceps tightness. The left-hander is already throwing from 90 feet on flat ground and should return to the mound by the end of this week. Provided that goes well, he could face hitters next week and go back on a rehab assignment shortly after that.

Manager Dave Roberts told reporters that Ohtani will likely be held out of the lineup either Wednesday or Thursday. He's hasn't started at designated hitter his last couple of games on the mound. If that's the case again, look for him to take his normal leadoff spot in Thursday's series finale.

Miguel Andujar homered and doubled with two RBIs against the Brewers, breaking out of a recent slump while maintaining a solid .292 batting average.
Andujar was 1-for-15 in his previous four games, but he's hitting a fine .292/.318/.491 overall. It's just not ideal that most of his production is coming against righties, when the Padres need him more versus lefties, but at least it's helping him stay in the lineup over Ty France and Nick Castellanos.

Ortiz had a 395-foot homer and a 381-foot sac fly. Incredibly, the homer was his first since last July 19. He'd gone 85 straight games without one, even though he had seven in his first 95 games last year and 11 in 142 games in 2024. Ortiz is batting just .198/.260/.244 this season, and he really needs to pick it up if he expects to stick around much longer. The Brewers are having him split time with David Hamilton right now, and they'll probably want to give Cooper Pratt a look at shortstop at some point.
