Yankees' Spencer Jones on comebacker that injured Clay Holmes: 'I m sorry. He s a friend of mine'

Yankees prospect Spencer Jones hit a line drive comebacker that fractured Mets starter Clay Holmes' fibula on Friday night.

It was a line drive off the bat of Yankees prospect Spencer Jones that caused Mets starter Clay Holmes to suffer a fractured fibula on Friday night, and the young slugger had no idea it happened.

Braxton Ashcraft pitched 6 2/3 innings against the Phillies on Friday, giving up four earned runs and striking out five.

Braxton Ashcraft pitched 6 2/3 innings against the Phillies, allowing four earned runs with five strikeouts despite elevated velocity.

Ashcraft's velocity was up, averaging 97.4 mph today, but he just wasn't finding missed bats against a tough Phillies lineup. He managed swinging strikes on just 10 of 59 swings by Philadelphia, and they pounded his fastball for seven of his 11 hard-hit balls allowed. One of his runs scored came from the bullpen, as Mason Montgomery inherited a runner and immediately allowed Kyle Schwarber to pound a fastball into the seats. All and all, not a terribly disappointing effort against a hot offense. Ashcraft probably still deserves set-it-and-forget-it status against the Cardinals next week.

Performance

Aaron Nola allowed six earned runs and walked three batters in 3 2/3 innings against the Pirates on Friday.

Aaron Nola struggled against the Pirates, allowing six earned runs in 3 2/3 innings with three walks, continuing a pattern of poor recent performances.

Ugly. Nola has now given up five or more earned runs in three of his last five starts. Both Brandon Lowe and Marcell Ozuna took him out and he left the Phillies in a 6-0 hole. The average fastball velocity is sitting near 92 mph and all eight of his hard-hit balls allowed came against his four-seamer, sinker, and cutter. He had a 6.01 ERA in 17 starts in 2025 with a 1.35 WHIP. He has a 5.91 ERA in nine starts in 2026 with a 1.55 WHIP. It'd be hard to trust him against the Reds next week.

Performance

Michael Wacha logged a quality start in a no-decision against the Cardinals on Friday evening, allowing three runs on five hits over his six frames.

Michael Wacha delivered a quality start with six innings pitched, allowing three runs on five hits with five strikeouts in a no-decision against the Cardinals.

The veteran right-hander struck out five batters in the ballgame while issuing only one base on balls. All of the damage done against him came via the long ball as Jordan Walker socked a two-run dinger in the fourth inning and Pedro Pages added a solo shot in the fifth. Wacha got 12 swings and misses on 87 pitches on the night, posting a strong CSW of 33 percent. He'll try to get back in the win column as he brings an outstanding 2.83 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and a 47/18 K/BB ratio (57 1/3 innings) into Wednesday's matchup against the Red Sox.

Performance

Isaac Collins went 0-for-2 with a pair of walks and two RBI on Friday night as the Royals dropped a heartbreaker to the Cardinals in extra innings.

Isaac Collins went 0-for-2 with two walks and two RBI in the Royals' extra-inning loss to the Cardinals, continuing a season of modest offensive production.

Collins plated a run with a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning that increased the Royals' early lead to 2-0. He tacked on another with an RBI ground out in the sixth that made it a 3-3 ballgame. For the season, the 28-year-old outfielder is slashing an uninspiring .225/.345/.342 with three homers, 15 RBI and a pair of stolen bases (in five attempts).

Performance

Dustin May pitched decently in a no-decision against the Royals on Friday evening, allowing three runs on four hits across his six innings.

Dustin May pitched six innings in a no-decision against the Royals, allowing three runs on four hits with four walks and three strikeouts.

May also issued four free passes while striking out three in the ballgame. The Royals scratched out a pair of runs against him in the fourth inning, then added another on a ground out in the sixth that tied things up at 3-3. May got eight whiffs on 91 pitches on the night while posting a CSW of 23 percent. He'll carry an underwhelming 4.81 ERA and 1.42 WHIP into Thursday's tilt against the Pirates.

Performance

Jordan Walker went 3-for-5 with a homer and two RBI on Friday night as the Cardinals triumphed over the Royals in 11 innings.

Jordan Walker went 3-for-5 with a home run and two RBIs to help the Cardinals defeat the Royals in 11 innings, continuing his breakout season.

Walker got the Cardinals on the board with a game-tying, 409-foot (104.5 mph EV) two-run shot off of Michael Wacha. He also singled twice in the ballgame. The dynamic 23-year-old outfielder has been one of the biggest surprises in all of baseball this season, slashing a robust .303/.376/.594 with 13 homers, 34 RBI and seven stolen bases through his first 186 plate appearances.

Performance

Orion Kerkering allowed only the man placed at second base in extra innings to score as he managed his first save of the season against the Pirates.

Orion Kerkering earned his first save of the season against the Pirates, pitching well with a 2.20 ERA and allowing just one run in seven May appearances.

Jhoan Duran worked a save on Thursday night and wasn't used in a tied game in the bottom of the ninth, but as the Phillies tacked on a three-spot in the top of the 10th, they opted to turn it over to Kerekeing in the bottom of the inning. The reliever now has a 2.20 ERA and has allowed just one run in seven appearances in May. He's not anywhere near the saves or holds pecking order right now, but he's pitching well enough that he could be interesting if enough fell his way in the latter part of the season.

Performance

Gregory Soto allowed three runs (two earned) in the ninth inning on Friday to blow a save against the Phillies.

Gregory Soto allowed three runs in the ninth inning on Friday, blowing a save opportunity against the Phillies.

Konnor Griffin's fielding error started the ninth inning inauspiciously. Soto was able to get Justin Crawford, but walked Adolis Garcia and allowed a ground-ball single to Trea Turner to load the bases. Soto then walked in a run against Kyle Schwarber and allowed a two-RBI 'single' to Bryce Harper that was reviewed for a home run and went 388 feet off the top of the wall. There were silver linings here for Soto. One of them is that he was able to exit the inning when Schwarber was thrown out at third on a cutoff play, and he induced an Alec Bohm flyout. Another is that Dennis Santana was absolutely roasted to take the loss in the tenth inning, not even retiring a single batter. Soto should still have plenty of rope as Pittsburgh's closer.

Performance

Kyle Schwarber went 3-for-5 with a pair of homers and 5 RBI as the Phillies held off the Pirates 11-9 in extra innings on Friday.

Kyle Schwarber went 3-for-5 with two homers and 5 RBIs as the Phillies defeated the Pirates 11-9 in extra innings, extending his hot streak with nine homers in his last eight games.

To say that Schwarber is on a tear is putting it mildly: He's got a 1.133 slugging percentage over his last seven games and has hit nine homers in his last eight games to take the major league lead. His first homer sailed just above the second railing in right-center in PNC Park off a 98 mph Braxton Ashcraft fastball, and then hit a lined shot opposite field against Mason Montgomery that just kept carrying, landing 408 feet away in left-center. The second homer surprised even the Phillies announcers with how it just kept carrying. Schwarber's only hitting .237. Oh well. Enjoy the ride, fantasy managers.

Performance

Royce Lewis went 1-for-4 with an RBI in Friday's loss to the Brewers.

Royce Lewis went 1-for-4 with an RBI in Friday's loss to the Brewers but continues to struggle at the plate this month.

Lewis drove home Luke Keaschall in the bottom of the seventh inning for his 13th RBI on the season. The veteran third baseman continues to struggle at the dish this month, going 3-for-31 on the month while slashing .097/.194/.129. Lewis can continue to be left on waiver wires until he turns a corner.

Performance

Trevor Megill pitched a scoreless ninth inning to pick up his fifth save of the season on Friday against the Twins.

Trevor Megill recorded his fifth save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning against the Twins.

Megill faced the minimum of three batters on Friday and struck out Royce Lewis to end the game. Megill's save comes two days after Abner Uribe notched his ninth save of the season, with Uribe making an appearance in the eighth inning of this one. While we don't quite know the reason manager Pat Murphy elected to flip the roles for his relievers in this one, we'll assume Uribe is still the preferred option to close out games.

Brandon Lowe went 2-for-5 with two homers and three RBIs in a loss to the Phillies on Friday.

Brandon Lowe went 2-for-5 with two home runs and three RBIs in a loss to the Phillies, improving his season stats to .250/.352/.591 with 12 homers and 31 RBIs.

His first was a lined shot just over PNC's right-field wall to put the Pirates up 4-0 early against Aaron Nola, then added a no-doubted to right-center off Tim Mayza that still hasn't landed. (It went 422 feet.) Lowe had only garnered hits in two of his last six games entering this one, but he immediately brought his line back up to .250/.352/.591 on the season with 12 homers and 31 RBI. He's certainly been a solid find for fantasy mangers picking outside of the top tier of second basemen.

Performance

Sean Burke allowed four earned runs over 4 1/3 innings while striking out five in Friday's loss to the Cubs.

Sean Burke allowed four earned runs over 4 1/3 innings with five strikeouts in a loss to the Cubs.

After retiring the first two batters he faced to start the game, Burke allowed back-to-back singles to Alex Bregman and Ian Happ, with Happ's single driving home the Cubs' first run of the night. Burke would pitch back-to-back scoreless innings in the second and third innings, but allowed three of the first four batters he faced in the fourth to reach base, with Carson Kelly driving in the Cubs' second run of the night on a single to bring in Ian Happ. Burke would exit with one out in the fifth inning after allowing back-to-back hits to start the frame, with Michael Busch and Seiya Suzuki both doubling home runs. Burke has now struggled in back-to-back outings, allowing 10 earned runs over 8 2/3 innings pitched while letting a combined 17 runners reach base. Prior to his struggles, Burke had allowed four or more earned runs in just one of his seven starts. He'll look to right the ship in his next outing, which is scheduled for Wednesday at the Mariners.

Performance

Edward Cabrera allowed three earned runs over 4 2/3 innings while striking out two in win over White Sox.

Edward Cabrera pitched 4 2/3 innings with three earned runs and two strikeouts in a Cubs win over the White Sox.

After retiring the White Sox in order in the first inning, Cabrera would be touched up for a 403-foot solo homer by Colson Montgomery in the second inning to tie the game at 1-1. He would bounce back to allow only one base runner over the next two innings, but in the fifth inning, Cabrera would walk the first two batters he faced, with both eventually coming around to score to cut the Cubs' lead to 4-3. Cabrera would not escape the inning, as he was pulled following a two-out walk to Sam Antonacci to give him his shortest outing of the season. Cabrera has now allowed three earned runs or more in each of his last seven starts, and has slowly seen his ERA balloon to 4.06 after finishing April with a 3.06 ERA.

Performance

Carson Kelly went 3-for-5 with a double and four RBI in Friday's win over the White Sox.

Carson Kelly went 3-for-5 with a double and four RBI in the Cubs' win over the White Sox, continuing his hot streak at the plate.

Kelly continues to swing a hot bat for the Cubs, and is now slashing .281/.324/.313 on the month. The veteran catcher drove in his first run of the night in the fourth inning when he singled home Ian Happy, and later drove in Alex Bregman from third on another RBI single in the seventh inning. In a four-run eighth inning for the Cubs, Kelly doubled with the bases loaded to drive home both Bregman and Seiya Suzuki, to put the finishing touches on one of his best nights at the dish. Kelly has had a decent month, but has yet to homer and has only one extra-base hit to show for his efforts over that span.

Performance

Bryce Harper went 4-for-5 with one run scored and two RBI in Philadelphia's win over the Pirates on Friday.

Bryce Harper went 4-for-5 with two RBI in the Phillies' win over the Pirates, continuing his strong start to the season with a .282/.372/.534 slash line and 10 homers in 34 games.

Not often you go 4-for-5 and get outshined by a teammate, but here we are. With the Phillies staked to an early 6-0 hole, Harper plinked three singles into the shallow outfield before unleashing a 388-foot 'single' off the top of the right-center field wall off Gregory Soto that tied the game in the top of the ninth. The 33-year-old superstar is now hitting .282/.372/.534 in his first 34 games of the year, with 10 homers and two stolen bases.

Performance

Colson Montgomery went 2-for-4 with a home run and an RBI in Friday's loss to the Cubs.

Colson Montgomery went 2-for-4 with a home run and an RBI in Friday's loss to the Cubs, extending his recent hot streak.

Montgomery's 12th homer of the season came in the second inning off of Cubs starter Edward Cabrera, who hung a changeup over the middle of the plate, which Montgomery deposited into right-center field. Montgomery has now homered in back-to-back games and three times in his last five.

Performance

Jack Leiter allowed one earned run over seven innings while striking out six in Friday's loss to the Astros.

Jack Leiter pitched well with one earned run over seven innings and six strikeouts in a loss to the Astros, but his strong performance was overshadowed by Astros starter Spencer Arrighetti's near no-hitter.

Talk about a tough break. On the night when Leiter had one of his best outings of the season, the righty was outshone by Astros starter Spencer Arrighetti, who took a no-hitter into the eighth inning. Leiter did everything he could to position the Rangers for a win in this one, but the solo homer he allowed to Isaac Paredes in the third inning proved to be too much to overcome in this one. Leiter has allowed just one earned run in his last two starts while pitching 11 2/3 innings and striking out 12. He'll look to pick up his second win of the season on Wednesday at the Rockies.

Performance

Isaac Paredes went 1-for-3 with a home run and an RBI in Friday's win over the Rangers.

Isaac Paredes hit a solo home run to break a scoreless tie as the Astros defeated the Rangers, with the team nearly completing a no-hitter.

Paredes broke a scoreless tie in the third inning when he blasted a solo shot off Jack Leiter to give the Astros a 1-0 lead. It was all the Astros would end up needing, as starter Spencer Arrighetti would pitch 7 1/3 innings of no-hit baseball before having the no-no broken up by Justin Foscue in the eighth inning. It was just the fourth homer of the season for Paredes, who has now hit safely in four of his last six games and is slashing .265/.368/.388 on the month.

Performance

Justin Foscue went 1-for-3 with a single in Friday's loss to the Astros.

Justin Foscue went 1-for-3 with a single in Friday's loss to the Astros, breaking up a no-hitter in the eighth inning.

Foscue laced a one-out single into left field in the eighth inning to break up Spencer Arrighetti's no-hitter. His hit would be the only one of the night for the Rangers, who struggled to get anything going despite only striking out six times as a team. It was just the third hit of the season for Foscue, who was recalled from Triple-A Round Rock earlier this month.

Performance

Tanner Bibee allowed seven hits and three earned runs in 6 2/3 innings against the Reds on Friday, falling to 0-6 in the process.

Tanner Bibee struggled against the Reds, allowing seven hits and three earned runs over 6 2/3 innings while falling to 0-6, with his hard-hit rate spiking to 46.2 percent.

Bibee's fastballs are just getting pulverized right now. Six of his ten hard-hit balls allowed were on his four-seamer or sinker, and his hard-hit rate has spiked from 36.6 percent in 2025 to 46.2 percent this year. He's got enough guile to pitch decently for the Guardians, but the trends here have him feeling hard to start in shallow leagues. He'll be a 15-team stream option against the Kerry Carpenter-less Tigers next week.

Performance

Tejay Antone allowed one run against the Guardians in the ninth inning to lock down his first save of the season.

Tejay Antone earned his first save of the season by pitching a scoreless ninth inning for the Reds against the Guardians.

Up 6-1 in the eighth inning, we weren't really expecting to have a save chance to write about for the Reds today. But Graham Ashcraft went Graham Splat, loading the bases with walks and allowing an RBI single without recording an out before Brock Burke walked in two more in relief of him. Having already used Pierce Johnson and Tony Santillan, the Reds turned to Antone, who allowed a triple to Kyle Manzardo but got three other batters out between that. Does this mean the Reds have a new closer? No, it means this game was weird. But Antone has good stuff and certainly could factor into what has become a full-blown committee in Emilio Pagan's absence.

Performance

Ben Rice went 3-for-5 with a homer, an RBI, and two runs scored in Friday's win over the Mets.

Ben Rice went 3-for-5 with a homer and two runs scored in the Yankees' win over the Mets.

Rice's first hit came in the third inning when he singled off former teammate Clay Holmes. He would come around to score two batters later via an RBI single by Cody Bellinger, and drove himself home in the ninth inning when he blasted a 415-foot solo homer to give the Yankees a 5-1 lead. It was the 14th homer of the season for Rice, who has now homered four times in May and is slashing .282/.349/.615 on the month.

Performance

Spencer Arrighetti pitched 7 1/3 innings of shutout ball while striking out five and walking four to pick up the win on Friday against the Rangers.

Spencer Arrighetti pitched 7 1/3 innings of shutout ball with 5 strikeouts to earn his fifth win against the Rangers, lowering his ERA to 1.50.

Arrighetti took a no-hitter into the eighth inning but had it broken up by Justin Foscue with one out. Despite walking four batters, Arrighetti never walked more than one batter in any inning and successfully pitched his way out of danger while firing five strikeouts. With this latest outing, Arrighetti has now lowered his ERA to 1.50 on the season while picking up his fifth win. His next start is scheduled for Wednesday on the road against the Twins.

Andrew Abbott pitched five innings against the Guardians in a win on Friday, allowing four hits and three walks, but just one run.

Andrew Abbott pitched five innings against the Guardians, allowing one run on four hits and three walks, improving his seasonal ERA to 4.21 after a strong stretch.

Buried by most after exiting April with a 5.97 ERA, Abbott has fought hard in his last three outings, allowing just one earned run in the process, to cut his seasonal ERA back to 4.21. Is it still mostly smoke and mirrors? Oh yeah. He struck out just two Guardians today and got a whiff on just three of 35 swings, and his walk rate has spiked to 9.9 percent. Will we recommend him against the Phillies next week? Probably not. But is it fun that he's back on whatever dark magic it takes for someone with this underlying profile to pitch like this? Undoubtedly.

Performance

Matt McLain went 2-for-3 with a home run, stolen base, and three RBI in Cincinnati's 7-6 win over the Guardians on Friday.

Matt McLain went 2-for-3 with a home run, stolen base, and three RBI in Cincinnati's 7-6 win over the Guardians, continuing a hot streak with back-to-back multi-hit games.

That makes back-to-back games with multiple hits and a homer for McLain, who snuck one over the left field porch against Peyton Pallette in an eighth-inning add on that the Reds turned out to very much need. McLain has raised his season line from .205/.310/.311 to .223/.330/.369 in the last two games. He's still not running as much as we'd like, but fantasy managers can feel free to hope this turns into a JJ Bleday-esque hot streak.

Performance

Juan Soto went 1-for-3 with a home run, an RBI, and a walk in Friday's loss to the Yankees.

Juan Soto went 1-for-3 with a home run and an RBI in the Mets' loss to the Yankees, extending his hitting streak to three of his last four games.

Soto put the Mets on the board in the seventh inning when he blasted a 417-foot homer to center off of Cam Schlittler to end the shutout. It's the sixth homer of the season for Soto, who was responsible for one of the Mets' five hits on the evening. Soto has now hit safely in three of his last four games but is slashing a dismal .174/.250/.348 on the month.

Zack Littell threw five shutout innings against the Orioles on Friday to pick up his second win of the season.

Zack Littell earned his second win of the season by throwing five shutout innings against the Orioles, though he allowed hard contact and his ERA remains elevated at 6.10.

Sure, we all saw these results coming. Littell turned ten hard-hit balls and seven whiffs in 40 swings into just two hits allowed and two walks, lowering his season ERA to 6.10. He allowed a double to Gunnar Henderson that would have been a homer in 19-of-30 parks, a 360-foot out to Tyler O'Neill that would have gone out of 12 parks, and assorted other loud contact along the way. Great news for him, but don't be fooled -- he's not worth starting even in what looks to be a good matchup against the Mets next week.

Performance

Marcelo Mayer hit his second home run and walked Friday against the braves.

Marcelo Mayer hit his second home run and walked against the Braves, though his overall batting average remains disappointing at .233.

Mayer's other homer came on Apr. 3 against the Padres. He's been really good defensively at second base for Boston, but his .233/.302/.336 line is quite disappointing, especially since he isn't even playing against lefties. Fortunately for him, Kristian Campbell still isn't really looking like a major leaguer while playing in Triple-A. If the Red Sox did need another infielder, they might be more likely to call up Nick Sogard.

Performance

Connelly Early pitched five innings of two-run ball and struck out six Friday against the Braves.

Connelly Early pitched five innings with two runs allowed and six strikeouts against the Braves, demonstrating solid performance with strong baserunner management.

Early surrendered homers to Drake Baldwin in the first and Michael Harris II in the fourth, but he did a nice job otherwise in stranding five runners. That he's been able to strand 86 percent of his baserunners this year is a big reason why has a 3.21 ERA against a 4.58 FIP and a 4.11 xERA. Early remains a lesser option in mixed leagues, but his matchup against the Royals next week is reasonable.

Performance

Spencer Strider held the Red Sox to one run in 5 1/3 innings in a no-decision Friday.

Spencer Strider pitched 5 1/3 innings against the Red Sox with strong performance metrics including a 2.45 ERA over his last three starts since returning from an oblique strain.

Strider got a pickoff in the first inning and caught stealing in the fourth and fifth inning to aid the cause tonight. He walked three and struck out just four, even though he generated 16 missed swings tonight. Opposing starter Connelly Early had six strikeouts and eight whiffs, by way of comparison. In three starts since returning from an oblique strain, Strider has a 2.45 ERA and an 18/10 K/BB in 14 2/3 innings. He'll pitch in Miami next time out.

Performance

Mike Yastrzemski delivered a game-winning double in the bottom of the 10th as the Braves edged the Red Sox 2-1 on Friday.

Mike Yastrzemski hit a game-winning double in the 10th inning to lift the Braves over the Red Sox 2-1, improving his week's stats and OPS.

As the leadoff man in a tie game in the 10th, Yastrzemski tried twice to bunt the runner to third, but both rolled foul. That freed him up to swing away, and he lined a ball into left-center to end the game. Yastrzemski is 4-for-7 with one homer, two doubles and five RBI in his four appearances this week, raising his OPS from .516 to .597. He needs a little hot streak here to guarantee that he starts over Mauricio Dubon against righties after Ronald Acuna Jr. returns.

Performance

Cam Schlittler allowed one earned run over 6 2/3 innings while striking out nine to pick up the win on Friday against the Mets.

Cam Schlittler pitched 6 2/3 innings with one earned run and nine strikeouts to earn the win against the Mets, continuing his dominant season with a 1.35 ERA.

It was business as usual for Schlittler, who struck out a season-high nine batters while allowing just three to reach base. Schlittler took a one-hit shutout into the seventh inning, but lost it on a leadoff homer by Juan Soto to give the Mets their first run on the night. Schlittler continues to be one of the most dominant arms in baseball, now boasting a 1.35 ERA and 0.78 WHIP on the season. His next start is scheduled for Wednesday at home against the Blue Jays.

Clay Holmes allowed four earned runs over 4 1/3 innings with eight strikeouts in a loss to the Yankees.

Holmes held his former team scoreless through the first two innings but ran into some trouble in the third inning. After retiring the first two batters he faced in the frame, Holmes would allow back-to-back singles to Ben Rice and Aaron Judge, who were then driven home by back-to-back doubles from Cody Bellinger and Jazz Chisholm. Holmes would retire Ryan McMahon on strikes to end the inning, but was charged with one more earned run in the fifth inning after being pulled for Austin Warren. Holmes struck out a season-high eight batters despite having his shortest and arguably his worst outing of the season. He draws another tough start in his next outing, which is scheduled for Wednesday on the road against the Nationals.

Performance

Jose Ramirez went 3-for-4 with an RBI in Cleveland's loss to the Reds on Friday.

Jose Ramirez went 3-for-4 with an RBI in Cleveland's loss to the Reds, raising his season average to .220 despite ongoing struggles at the plate.

It was his first three-hit effort of the season, even if two of the hits were singles and he didn't provide much juice with them. Ramirez fought hard to undo his ghastly 25 at-bats in March with a .250/.384/.500 April, but he's hit just .216/.359/.255 in May and entered play today with a .207 average for the season. This effort raised it to .220. The underlying metrics continue to believe that Ramirez will pull out of this, as he has a .370 xwOBA against a .318 actual wOBA. It is worth noting that his strikeout rate has creeped up to 14.2 percent this year, but fantasy managers should expect him to come alive sooner rather than later.

Brusdar Graterol has been pulled from his minor league rehab assignment and will undergo imaging after experiencing a back issue during his rehabilitation stint.

Graterol experienced a dip in velocity during his latest outing at Triple-A Oklahoma City which started the concern. We'll wait and see what the imaging shows, but this will definitely push back the timeline for his return to the Dodgers' bullpen.

Performance

Shane Baz threw seven innings and allowed three runs on Friday against the Nationals, but took the loss to fall to 1-5.

Shane Baz took a loss against the Nationals after pitching seven innings with three runs allowed, falling to 1-5 with a 5.26 ERA through nine starts.

Baz at least pitched deep enough to give the Orioles pen a break, but he only got a whiff on six of 53 swings and allowed nine hard-hit balls. The Orioles traded for Baz this offseason and gave him an extension that valued him as if they'd already fixed him. With a 5.26 ERA and 1.52 WHIP through his first nine starts, it looks like they've done anything but. Baz is slated to face his old team, the Rays, next week in a matchup we can't really recommend.

Performance

Richard Lovelady came on with two runners on in the ninth inning and struck out Adley Rutschman to earn his second save of the season.

Richard Lovelady earned his second save of the season by striking out Adley Rutschman in a high-pressure ninth-inning situation.

The plan originally was for Andrew Alvarez to go four and piggyback off Zack Littell, but Alvarez allowed a single and walk to start the ninth inning. Gus Varland, the closer in name if not in results, walked Leodys Taveras, struck out Coby Mayo, and allowed a sacrifice fly to get the Nationals to two outs. Then the Nationals summoned Lovelady to deal with lefty-hitting Gunnar Henderson. Henderson singled to bring the Orioles within a run, and after a Taylor Ward walk loaded the bases, the lefty was able to freeze Adley Rutschman on the outside corner to end the game. Varland still looks like the closer to roster in this pen in fantasy leagues, but the Nationals don't really have a good answer right now.

Performance

Gunnar Henderson went 2-for-5 with an RBI as the Orioles fell to the Nationals on Friday.

Gunnar Henderson went 2-for-5 with an RBI as the Orioles lost to the Nationals, continuing a season of mixed production with power but a low batting average.

It's been grim. Henderson has delivered the nine homers and five stolen bases -- good production -- but has weighed them down with a .202 batting average even after this performance. In fact, he's been so cold out of the gate that he hasn't raised his batting average above .246 all season. Henderson has two or more hits in three of his last six games and hasn't struck out multiple times since May 6. Perhaps he's turning a corner. Fantasy managers that invested an early pick on him have little else to do but hope that's true.

Performance

Joe Ryan allowed one earned run over six innings while striking out seven in a no-decision on Friday against the Brewers.

Joe Ryan pitched six innings with one earned run and seven strikeouts in a no-decision against the Brewers.

Ryan ran into trouble early in this one, allowing a leadoff double to Jackson Chourio on the first pitch of the game. Chourio would come around to score two batters later on an RBI single by William Contreras, but Ryan was able to limit further damage in the inning. It would be the only run Ryans would allow on the night, as he settled in to pitch five-straight scoreless frames while tying a season-high with seven strikeouts. Ryan has allowed two earned runs or fewer in his last four starts, but hasn't won a game since April 11th. He'll look to pick up his third win of the season in his next outing, which is scheduled for Wednesday against the Astros.

Performance

Jackson Chourio went 2-for-5 with a double and two runs scored in Friday's win over the Twins.

Jackson Chourio went 2-for-5 with a double and two runs scored in the Brewers' 3-2 victory over the Twins.

Chourio doubled off of Joe Ryan on the first pitch of the game and came around to score two batters later thanks to a William Contreras single. He would later score in the eighth inning and again came in to score via a fielder's choice by Contreras, to tie the game at 2-2. Chourio also struck out three times in this one, but both of his hits and runs proved vital in the 3-2 victory. Chourio is still waiting for his first homer of 2026, but he's slashing a solid .300/.349/.400 since returning from injury.

Daylen Lile went 3-for-4 with a home run as the Nationals beat the Orioles 3-2 on Friday.

Daylen Lile went 3-for-4 with a home run as the Nationals defeated the Orioles 3-2, continuing a hot streak with 10 hits in his last five games.

He snuck a two-run shot just over the right-center fence in Nationals Park off Shane Baz in the sixth inning. Lile now has 10 hits in his last five games, four of them have cleared the fences, and he's even added a steal in the process. He's hitting .319/.370/.681 in May. He may have been dropped in some shallow formats, but he's both a good enough hitter to keep this up and a well-rounded enough player to be a reasonable starter in 12-team leagues. On the season he's now hitting .274/.335/.463 with seven homers and three stolen bases.

Performance

Trey Yesavage pitched well in a no-decision against the Tigers on Friday night, surrendering just two runs on four hits over his six frames.

Trey Yesavage pitched six strong innings with six strikeouts in a no-decision against the Tigers, allowing just two runs on four hits.

The 22-year-old right-hander racked up six strikeouts on the evening while issuing three free passes. The Tigers scratched out a run against him in the third inning as Kevin McGonigle scampered home on a wild pitch. They added another in the sixth as Riley Greene smacked an RBI double. Yesavage got 19 swings and misses on 88 pitches on the night, registering a strong CSW of 33 percent. He'll carry a brilliant 1.40 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and a 21/8 K/BB ratio (19 1/3 innings) into a tough matchup against the Yankees in the Bronx on Wednesday.

Performance

Andres Gimenez went 1-for-3 with a double and two RBI on Friday night as the Blue Jays fell to the Tigers in Motown.

Andres Gimenez went 1-for-3 with a double and two RBI in the Blue Jays' loss to the Tigers, continuing his solid season at the plate.

The 27-year-old infielder opened the scoring in the ballgame with a two-run double off of Brant Hurter in the second inning. That would prove to be the extent of the Jays' offense in the ballgame. Gimenez is having a solid season at the dish, slashing .250/.276/.417 with five homers, 25 RBI and five stolen bases in his first 153 plate appearances.

Performance

Drew Anderson did a terrific job out of the Tigers' bullpen on Friday night, working four scoreless innings against the Blue Jays.

Drew Anderson pitched four scoreless innings out of the Tigers' bullpen against the Blue Jays, allowing just one hit with one strikeout in a Tigers victory.

Anderson allowed just one hit on the night while recording one strikeout. He came on with the Tigers trailing by a run in the fifth inning and he kept the Jays' offense at bay until the ninth when the Tigers ultimately scored to win the game. For the season, the 32-year-old right-hander holds a 4.67 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and a 31/12 K/BB ratio over 27 innings.

Performance

Kenley Jansen picked up his first victory as a member of the Tigers on Friday night, working a scoreless top half of the ninth inning in a tied game against the Blue Jays.

Kenley Jansen earned his first win as a Tiger, pitching a scoreless ninth inning in a tied game against the Blue Jays before Detroit walked it off.

Jansen made it look easy in this one, retiring all three hitters that he faced including punchouts of Yohendrick Pinedo and Kazuma Okamoto. He then became the beneficiary when the Tigers walked it off in the bottom of the frame. For the season, the 38-year-old closer holds a 3.97 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and a 17/5 K/BB ratio across 11 1/3 innings while converting seven of his first 10 save chances.

Performance

Spencer Torkelson played the role of hero on Friday night, delivering a walk-off RBI single that propelled the Tigers to a 3-2 victory over the visiting Blue Jays.

Spencer Torkelson hit a walk-off RBI single to lead the Tigers to a 3-2 victory over the Blue Jays.

The Tigers entered the home half of the ninth embattled in a 2-2 tie. Matt Vierling started the rally with a one out single and swiped second base, then after Zach McKinstry was walked intentionally, Torkelson smacked a 2-2 fastball from Jeff Hoffman into right field for the game-winning hit. He finished the night 1-for-3 and is now hitting .200/.324/.379 with six homers and 17 RBI on the season.

Performance

Janson Junk allowed seven earned runs over 5 2/3 innings while striking out two in Friday's loss to the Rays.

Janson Junk gave up seven earned runs over 5 2/3 innings with two strikeouts in a loss to the Rays.

Junk retired the first two batters he faced on the day, but walked Jonathan Aranda to set up Yandy Diaz for a two-run homer that gave the Rays an early lead in the first frame. Junk would give up two more runs in the second inning, allowing Richie Palacios to score on a sacrifice fly and Cedric Mullins to be driven home on a fielder's choice. After keeping the rays off the board in the third inning, Junk would allow two more runs in the fourth on an RBI double by Taylor Walls, but bounced back to pitch a scoreless fifth inning before being pulled with two outs in the sixth. Junk has had a rough two-game stretch, allowing 11 earned runs in his last two outings while also letting 22 runners reach base. He'll look to bounce back in his next start, which is scheduled for Wednesday against a tough Braves team.

Performance

Ian Seymour allowed one earned run over two innings while striking out two in Friday's win over the Marlins.

Ian Seymour allowed one earned run over two innings with two strikeouts while serving as the Rays' opener in a win over the Marlins.

Seymour made it through the first inning unscathed, retiring all three batters he faced, but allowed a solo homer to Connor Norby in the top of the second inning to give the Marlins their first run of the night. Serving as the Rays' opener for the night, Seymour was pulled after just two innings, giving way to Jesse Scholtens. This is the first time Seymour has been used as an opener this season, so it seems unlikely he would draw another start any time soon.

Performance

Yandy Diaz went 1-for-3 with a walk, a home run, and two RBI in Friday's win over the Marlins.

Yandy Diaz went 1-for-3 with a walk and a two-run home run in the Rays' win over the Marlins, bringing his season total to six homers.

Diaz wasted little time putting the Rays on the board, taking the first pitch he saw from Marlins starter Janson Junk 383 feet into left field for a two-run homer to put the Rays up 2-0. Diaz has now homered six times on the season, with three of those homers coming in his last 15 games. He's slashing just .228/.297/.404 over that span, but the power is an encouraging sign.

Performance

Connor Norby went 1-for-4 with a homer and one RBI in Friday's loss to the Rays.

Connor Norby hit a solo homer in Friday's loss to the Rays, his fourth of the season, but continues to struggle overall with a weak slash line.

Norby put the Marlins on the board in the second inning when he hit a solo homer to left center to cut the Rays' lead to 2-1. It was the fourth homer of the season for Norby, who isn't known for his power and has a slash line of .217/.308/.391 over the last week. Despite the homer, there's not much to get excited about here.

While Polanco initially went on the injured list with a wrist issue, the Achilles problem happened first and has lingered. It also seems to be the bigger hindrance to this return right now, as Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns said that Polanco's Achilles tendon needs to be "asymptomatic" before knowing when he'll be back. Polanco is performing some baseball activities, like taking batting practice, but there is no timeline for his return right now.

Elbow - Tommy John · Season-Ending

Baltimore Banner's Andy Kostka reports Jordan Westburg (elbow) will have surgery and miss the rest of the season.

Jordan Westburg will undergo elbow surgery and miss the remainder of the season.

While it's not explicitly said in the report, it's likely that Westburg is undergoing Tommy John or an internal brace surgery as those were among the options presented earlier in May after he was shut down. Westburg will enter his age-28 season in 2027 looking to re-establish himself as a cornerstone for the Orioles. His absence means there is no playing time threat to Jeremiah Jackson and Blaze Alexander at second and third base for the remainder of the season.

Rockies OF prospect Cole Carrigg went 2-for-5 with an RBI for Triple-A Albuquerque on Thursday.

Rockies prospect Cole Carrigg extended his hitting streak to 14 games with a 2-for-5 performance and is hitting .367 with improved contact rates and speed utilization this season.

That extends Carrigg's hitting streak to 14 games, and he has a hit in 21 of his last 22 games. On the season, the 24-year-old is hitting .367/.420/.557 with four home runs, 34 RBI, 26 steals, and a 24/13 K/BB ratio. He hit 15 home runs and stole 46 bases in Double-A last year, but the batting average was not good. This season, Carrigg is pulling the ball more often and hitting it on the ground 12 percent more often, making good use of his speed. He's also improved his contact rate by 10 percent and cut his swinging strike rate down to nine percent. If these gains hold, he could be a major asset in Coors Field for batting average and stolen bases when he gets his chance.

The Tampa Bay Rays designated right-handed pitcher Aaron Brooks for assignment after a poor performance in his only appearance.

Brooks managed an 81.00 ERA in one appearance in which he got one out while allowing four runs (three earned) and took a loss. Assuming he clears waivers, the 36-year-old will be able to opt out of an outright assignment to Durham should he so desire.

USA Today's Josh Peter reported that Dodgers' closer Edwin Diaz and Kentucky Derby winning jockeys Jose Ortiz and Irad Ortiz Jr. are "linked to cockfighting events in Puerto Rico."

Dodgers closer Edwin Diaz is reported to be linked to cockfighting events in Puerto Rico based on social media posts showing him at tournaments.

Peter reported that social media posts show Diaz and the Ortiz brothers posing for photos advertising the cockfighting tournaments. Diaz appears in his Dodgers jersey in one of the photographs, and one of the advertisements specifically says one of the tournaments is "A Tribute to the Puerto Rican Star and Cockfighter Edwin 'Sugar' Diaz." There's another story from March 10th, which shows Diaz in the middle of a cockfighting arena. While cockfighting is historic and culturally significant in Puerto Rico, a federal ban on cockfighting in all 50 states and U.S. territories took effect in 2019. Neither Diaz nor the Dodgers has commented on the report, and there is no indication right now whether the reliever, who is on the injured list after elbow surgery, will face any sort of consequences.

Jorge Polanco received a platelet-rich plasma injection about a month ago for his wrist and Achilles issues, and is performing baseball activities but has no return timeline yet.

Jonah Tong allowed seven runs (six earned) on five hits in 1 2/3 innings for Triple-A Syracuse on Thursday.

Jonah Tong had a poor outing for Triple-A Syracuse, allowing seven runs on five hits in 1 2/3 innings, raising concerns about his call-up prospects.

He also walked three, struck out three, and threw 32 of his 55 pitches for strikes. Tong allowed three extra-base hits, including two home runs. The 22-year-old now sports a 5.68 ERA on the season and seems to be falling further down the pecking order in terms of potential call-ups for this season.

Lat Inflammation · Rehab Assignment

Matt Brash (lat) struck out the side in a scoreless inning for Triple-A Tacoma on Thursday.

Matt Brash made his first rehab appearance for Triple-A Tacoma after being sidelined since late April with lat inflammation, striking out the side in a scoreless inning.

Not bad for your first rehab appearance. Brash has been out since late April with lat inflammation, but he threw 9 of his 15 pitches for strikes here, which is great to see. On the other hand, he was sitting 95.1 mph on his sinker, which is over two mph down from where he normally is. We'll have to watch and see if the velocity ticks back up in his next rehab outing.

Arroyo took Jose Urquidy deep in the first inning for his ninth home run of the season. It also gives him 30 RBI to go along with a .348 batting average and a 1.025 OPS. It may seem like Edwin Arroyo has been around a while because he was a major part of the Luis Castillo trade four years ago, but Arroyo is just 22 years old. He then strolled to the dish with the bases loaded in the third inning and added a two-run single that pushed the Sox' advantage to 4-1. Sean Newcomb picked up his first save of the season on Thursday, working two scoreless innings to close out the Royals.

Sean Newcomb earned his first save of the season for the White Sox, pitching two scoreless innings against the Royals while maintaining strong season statistics.

Newcomb came on with the White Sox leading 6-3 in the eighth inning and despite allowing a leadoff single to Salvador Perez, managed to work a scoreless inning on just nine total pitches. He then returned for the ninth inning after the White Sox tacked on a run in the home half of the eighth, where he retired to side to send the White Sox' faithful home happy. He has been a valuable addition to the White Sox' bullpen this season, posting a strong 2.81 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and a 24/8 K/BB ratio across 25 2/3 innings.

Performance

Anthony Kay logged a quality start during Thursday's victory over the Royals, surrendering two runs on six hits across six-plus innings.

Anthony Kay delivered a quality start with six-plus innings pitched, allowing two runs on six hits with four strikeouts in the team's victory over the Royals.

The 31-year-old southpaw struck out four batters on the night while issuing two free passes. The Royals scratched out a run against him in the opening inning, then Kay blanked them until the seventh where he exited after allowing a leadoff triple to Kyle Isbel. Kay got 10 whiffs on 97 offerings on the night, posting a CSW of 27 percent. Now 3-1 on the season, he'll carry a 4.61 ERA, 1.54 WHIP and a 29/19 K/BB ratio (41 innings) into Tuesday's matchup against the Mariners in Seattle. He remains nothing more than a fringe streaming option in deeper mixed leagues.

Performance

Tanner Scott fanned two in a perfect ninth for a save Thursday against the Giants.

Tanner Scott recorded a perfect ninth inning with two strikeouts for his fourth save, lowering his ERA to 1.47 with an impressive 3% walk rate.

Scott lowered his ERA to 1.47 ERA while picking up his fourth save in four tries. He's walked just two of the 65 batters he's faced this year, giving up a three percent walk rate that is just one quarter of his career mark of 12 percent. Scott did pitch Wednesday, too, so he might get Friday off. If so, Alex Vesia, who earned a hold tonight, could be the choice to close.

Performance

Landen Roupp yielded four runs in 5 1/3 innings Thursday in a loss to the Dodgers.

Landen Roupp allowed four runs in 5 1/3 innings in a loss to the Dodgers, striking out seven but taking the loss after runners he left on base scored.

Roupp struck out seven and departed a 2-2 game in the sixth before both runners he left on base came around to score off Matt Gage, putting him in line for the loss. He's 5-4 with a 3.49 ERA despite having struck out 58 and having allowed just two homers through 49 innings. He'll pitch in Arizona next week.

Performance

Emmet Sheehan pitched two-run ball for six innings and struck out six in a win over the Giants on Thursday.

Emmet Sheehan delivered an impressive pitching performance with six strikeouts over six innings in the Dodgers' win over the Giants, marking his second-best outing of the season.

The two runs came on a fluky inside-the-park homer from Jung Hoo Lee. That Sheehan racked up 19 whiffs and allowed just two hard-hit balls tonight makes this easily his second most impressive performance of 2026, behind only his 10-strikeout game against the Cubs. It's still an issue that he just can't maintain his best velocity for more than an inning or two, but as long as the Dodgers keep starting him, he'll probably be worth using in mixed leagues. He'll make his next start Wednesday versus the Padres.

With both Shohei Ohtani and Mookie Betts resting, Smith made his first ever start as a leadoff hitter and wasted no time in putting the Dodgers on the board against Landon Roupp. It was technically his second homer as a leadoff man. He'd come off the bench to occupy that spot twice previously, and one of those two at-bats produced a walkoff three-run homer against the Rockies' Scott Oberg on June 23, 2019. Smith has yet to get hot at any point this season, but he surely will. He's currently hitting .258/.329/.379 with four homers through 140 plate appearances.

Ian Happ went 2-for-3 with a walk and solo home run, leading the Cubs to a 2-0 victory over the Braves.

Happ started the sixth inning by working Chris Sale for a seven-pitch walk. He then advanced to second on a fielder's choice and took third on an error before scoring the game's first run on a fielder's choice off the bat of Matt Shaw. He then provided a massive insurance run with a 424-foot (107.6 mph EV) solo shot off of Reynaldo Lopez in the eighth inning. For the season, the 31-year-old slugger is now hitting .234/.376/.481 with 10 homers, 19 RBI and a pair of stolen bases through his first 189 plate appearances.

Jung Hoo Lee hit a two-run inside-the-park homer against the Dodgers on Thursday.

Jung Hoo Lee hit an inside-the-park two-run homer against the Dodgers, his third homer of the season, while maintaining league-average offensive and defensive production.

Lee's homer was a 73-mph fly down the left field line that landed just fair and then took an odd bounce off the side wall past a rather nonchalant Teoscar Hernandez. It went as his third homer of the year. He's batting .267/.313/.394 in 179 plate appearances. It's not quite what the Giants were hoping for, but at least he's been a league-average hitter and fielder after moving from center to right.

Performance

Ha-Seong Kim went 0-for-3 with a strikeout as the Braves were shut out by the Cubs, and he continues to struggle offensively since returning from the injured list.

As a team, the Braves had just five hits in the contest -- all of them singles -- so Kim wasn't solely responsible for the ineffective night at the plate. He has struggled since returning from the injured list, slashing just .111/.200/.111 with zero RBI through his first 10 plate appearances on the season.
