Gage Workman -- Injury Report

Injury Report sources for Gage Workman of the Chicago White Sox

The Tigers placed Kerry Carpenter on the 10-day injured list after he sustained a left AC joint sprain while pursuing a Bobby Witt Jr. grounder that resulted in an inside-the-park home run during Detroit's 5-1 loss to the Royals. Carpenter was removed from the game before the third inning. To fill the roster spot, Detroit selected infielder Gage Workman's contract from Triple-A and shifted Justin Verlander from the 15-day to the 60-day IL to create a 40-man roster opening.

Carpenter has posted inconsistent production this season with a .216/.299/.451 slash line and 105 wRC+ over 117 plate appearances, with six home runs. While his power remains intact through hard contact, his strikeout rate has jumped significantly to 34.2%, well above his previous four-season MLB average of 24.6%. Despite the struggles, Carpenter had been available to play for an injury-plagued Tigers team.

Workman, a fourth-round pick in the 2020 draft, is making his first appearance in a Tigers uniform after bouncing through the Cubs and White Sox via the 2024 Rule 5 Draft before being returned to Detroit. He has thrived in Triple-A with a .358/.413/.590 slash line through 150 plate appearances in 2026. Though his minor league track record has been solid rather than outstanding, his versatility across multiple infield positions provides depth relief for Detroit's injury-ravaged roster. Wenceel Perez is expected to handle the majority of right field duties during Carpenter's absence.
