Scouting Report: Kellen Strahm
Houston Astros | CF
Overall
Summary
Matt Strahm, a left-handed reliever acquired by the Kansas City Royals from the Phillies in December 2025, was placed on the 15-day injured list on May 16, 2026, with right knee inflammation. The injury occurred during his appearance on Friday, May 15th. Strahm has a history of knee inflammation issues (September 2020 and 2021), but both previous instances resulted in minimal absences (12 days and 2 weeks respectively). He was fully healthy from 2023 onward prior to this injury. Coming into 2026, Strahm had posted a strong 2.30 ERA in 125 relief innings from 2024-25 and earned an All-Star nomination in 2024. However, his 2026 performance has been inconsistent with a 3.86 ERA and 23.9% strikeout rate, both worse than his previous season. His velocity is also down, with his four-seamer declining from 92.2 to 91.1 MPH. The Royals are optimistic he will return quickly given his minimal absences for knee inflammation in the past.
Strengths
- History of quick recovery from knee inflammation (12 days in 2020, 2 weeks in 2021)
- Fully healthy from 2023 onward prior to current injury
