Luis Robert Jr. has been on the injured list since late April with a lower back injury (lumbar spine disc herniation). As of mid-May 2026, he is not progressing as expected and continues to experience lingering symptoms and discomfort in his lower back. He has not been cleared to resume baseball activities. The Mets have consulted with additional specialists and received an injection upon landing on the IL, but there is no clear timeline for his return. The team initially expected him to miss only the minimum IL time, but his slow recovery has led to the call-up of prospect A.J. Ewing to fill the center field position.
