Scouting Report

Updated May 20, 2026

Rodolfo Durán, a 28-year-old Dominican catcher, was called up by the San Diego Padres to make his MLB debut on May 22, 2026, replacing Luis Campusano who was placed on the 10-day IL with a broken left toe. Durán signed with the Padres in January 2025 after spending time in the minor leagues with the Phillies, Yankees, and Royals organizations. He was batting .238 with a .785 OPS in 23 games for Triple-A El Paso before his call-up. Padres manager Craig Stammen praised Durán's defensive abilities, arm strength, and recent offensive improvements, noting the team "really loved what we saw from him in spring training this year and what he did last year in Triple-A." Durán made his debut batting ninth and catching right-hander Michael King.

Strengths

  • + Great defensive catcher with strong arm
  • + Praised by manager Craig Stammen for spring training performance
  • + Bat has come alive over the last two years
  • + Long minor league development since 2015 provides experience
  • + International signing from Dominican Republic shows scouting success
  • + Opportunity to establish himself as a big league catcher

Weaknesses

  • - Limited MLB experience - making debut at age 28
  • - Triple-A batting average of .238 is concerning
  • - .785 OPS in Triple-A is below average
  • - Career minor league player with limited track record at highest level
  • - Replacing injured starter suggests depth chart position may be temporary
