Ryan O'Hearn, who recently signed a two-year, $29 million deal with the Pirates, has committed to transitioning from first base to full-time outfielder to accommodate the potential signing of Marcell Ozuna. Manager Don Kelly called O'Hearn before spring training to discuss the positional shift, and O'Hearn enthusiastically endorsed the move, stating he wants to be on a winning team doing something special. O'Hearn has logged only 733 MLB innings in the outfield versus 2,886 1/3 at first base, but he views the adjustment as manageable, attributing it simply to getting consistent reps and reads as a full-time outfielder rather than filling in occasionally. Despite these setbacks, O'Hearn remained positive, worked extensively with Royals hitting coach John Mabry to refine his swing and approach, and eventually broke through in 2023.
