Scouting Report
Updated May 19, 2026
Ray Black was optioned to Triple-A Nashville by the Milwaukee Brewers to make room for Christian Yelich's return from injury. Black served as a DH/corner outfielder during Yelich's absence and performed well, but has limited playing time prospects with Yelich, Andrew Vaughn, Jake Bauers, and the catching tandem of William Contreras and Gary Sánchez all competing for at-bats. This is Black's final minor league option year, and his future with the organization remains uncertain.
Strengths
- + Performed well as DH during Yelich's month-long absence
- + Brewers ranked 8th in scoring while he was getting regular at-bats
- + Demonstrated ability to contribute at the major league level
Weaknesses
- - Limited defensive value restricts positional flexibility
- - No longer used as third baseman since 2024
- - Crowded roster with multiple first base/DH options ahead of him
- - Final minor league option year creates uncertainty about future
- - Optioned back to Triple-A with no clear path to regular playing time
Injury Status: day-to-day
