General News sources for Wenceel Perez of the Detroit Tigers
Wenceel Perez will make his 2026 Detroit Tigers debut after being recalled to replace Parker Meadows, who suffered a broken arm and concussion in an outfield collision. The 26-year-old outfielder was initially excluded from the Opening Day roster despite Tigers manager A.J. Hinch describing it as 'a little bit unfair,' citing a poor spring training performance where Perez hit .190.
Following his assignment to Triple-A Toledo, Perez demonstrated significant improvement. Over 10 games and 44 at-bats in AAA, he is batting .250 with an .808 OPS, accumulating 11 hits, 9 runs, and 5 extra-base hits while drawing 7 walks against 7 strikeouts. This represents marked improvement in plate discipline compared to spring training, when he had 13 strikeouts and only 4 walks.
Perez attributed his offensive struggles to timing issues that caused him to swing at pitches outside the zone. 'Because I was doing it so quick, that's why probably I was swinging at so many pitches out of the zone,' he explained. He credited seeing more pitches over time and making a small timing adjustment for his improvement. Perez will bat eighth and start in right field for Friday's game against Miami.
