Jake McCarthy -- Performance Analysis
Performance Analysis sources for Jake McCarthy of the Colorado Rockies
Jake McCarthy has become a significant contributor to the Arizona Diamondbacks' second-half turnaround (25-19 record), emerging as one of baseball's most productive hitters since June. After being ranked as Arizona's 20th prospect in 2021, McCarthy struggled early in 2022 with a 78 wRC+ through May. Since June 1, he has nearly doubled that mark to 147 across 188 plate appearances.
McCarthy's breakout is largely attributable to mechanical improvements and strategic approach changes. He overhauled his batting stance from a crouched, closed position to an upright, open stance, allowing better load and drive-through mechanics. Concurrently, he became more aggressive, increasing his swing rate from 43.2% to 53.3%, particularly on first pitches (up 13.6 percentage points to 40.7%), shifting from a passive to control-oriented approach at the plate.
Post All-Star break, McCarthy's impact has been elite: he leads MLB with 13 stolen bases (15 total on the season), ranks first in batting average (.319) and on-base percentage (.383), second in hits (44) and RBIs (26), and second in doubles (8). His emergence adds depth to Arizona's already impressive outfield prospects, which include recent debuts Alek Thomas and Corbin Carroll, plus top-2022 draft pick Druw Jones.
