Will Benson -- Performance Analysis

Performance Analysis sources for Will Benson of the Cincinnati Reds

Will Benson of the Cincinnati Reds achieved an MLB first on Sunday by scoring two runs without recording an official at-bat in a 7-4, 10-inning victory over the Minnesota Twins. Entering the game as a pinch runner in the ninth inning, Benson scored on a three-run double by TJ Friedl. In the 10th inning, he drew an intentional walk and scored again on a two-run double by Rece Hinds.

Despite this historic offensive contribution, Benson's roster status remains precarious. Through 18 games this season, he has struggled significantly with a .188 batting average and only 3 runs scored. His performance has been inconsistent over the past several seasons: he hit .187 in 343 at-bats in 2024 and .226 with 12 home runs in 2023, falling short of his 2023 peak of 11 home runs in 108 games.

The Reds' front office faces a decision regarding their outfield composition. The team signed free agent JJ Bleday to a one-year, $1.4 million contract during the offseason to compete with Benson and Nathaniel Lowe for playing time. Though Bleday lost the spring training competition, he may soon force the team's hand. Playing for Triple-A Louisville, Bleday is hitting .338 with 5 home runs and 18 RBI over 20 games. If Benson's offensive struggles continue, the Reds may promote Bleday to the majors.
