Spencer Steer -- General News

General News sources for Spencer Steer of the Cincinnati Reds

In the 10th inning of a game between the Cincinnati Reds and Washington Nationals at Great American Ball Park, Spencer Steer hit a drive to left field that appeared to have home run potential. A fan caught the ball at the yellow line atop the outfield fence. The umpires ruled fan interference, awarding Steer a ground-rule double instead of allowing him to round the bases. After review, the call was upheld, leaving Steer at second base. The Reds ultimately lost 8-7.

Both Reds manager Terry Francona and Reds.TV analyst Sam LeCure acknowledged the difficulty in determining the ball's trajectory. Francona stated, "It looked like they probably got it right... It would've been hard to overturn that, in my opinion. I wish they would have." LeCure explained that the ambiguity stemmed from uncertainty about how the ball would carom off the yellow line and that camera angles could not definitively show which direction the ball was headed. LeCure concluded, "We're never going to know that. That's unfortunate. That feels like another little snakebite."
