Louis Varland pitched a scoreless eighth inning on Wednesday against the Rays, striking out two while allowing a walk and two hits.

Varland threw 27 pitches on Tuesday, so it was interesting to see him used in the eighth while Toronto trailed 1-0. It's not the usage fantasy managers want to see, but he still has the team's five most recent saves, and this was a game the Jays needed to have. It worked out as Daulton Varsho launched a walk-off grand slam in extras, earning the win for Jeff Hoffman. Varland should be the primary closer going forward, but manager John Schneider isn't always saving him for just the ninth.
