Scouting Report: Alex Valverde
St Louis Cardinals | SP
Overall
Summary
Alex Verdugo, 29-year-old outfielder, was released by the San Diego Padres in May 2026 after suffering a shoulder labrum injury requiring season-ending surgery. Verdugo signed a minor-league contract with the Padres in March 2026 but never appeared in any minor-league games. He played only 2 Spring Training games (1-for-6 with a walk) before the injury occurred. This marks a devastating development in his career trajectory, as he had not played a major-league game in approximately 20 months. His 2025 season with the Atlanta Braves was particularly poor, posting a career-worst .239/.296/.289 slash line with no home runs over 56 games and a -0.3 bWAR before being released in July 2025. His career has declined significantly since being traded to the Yankees before the 2024 season.
Strengths
- Had five consecutive seasons of average or better offensive production with the Dodgers and Red Sox (2019-2023)
- Career .270 batting average across 856 games
