Scouting Report: Anthony Volpe
New York Yankees | SS
Overall
Summary
Anthony Volpe, 25-year-old Yankees shortstop, was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on May 13, 2026, following Jose Caballero's fractured finger injury. Volpe underwent offseason shoulder surgery and completed a lengthy rehab assignment, but struggled significantly in the minors with a .221 batting average across 18 games. In his season debut on May 14 against Baltimore, Volpe went 0-for-3 with an error on a routine ground ball, continuing a troubling trend of defensive inconsistency. He was subsequently optioned back to Triple-A after this poor performance. The recall was made out of necessity rather than merit, and Volpe faces significant pressure to prove himself upon his next opportunity.
Strengths
- Fully healthy after shoulder surgery recovery
- Defensive pedigree as 2023 Gold Glove winner
