Scouting Report: Omar Martinez
Overall
Summary
Omar Martínez, 24-year-old Venezuelan catcher, had his contract selected by the Angels on May 8, 2026, to fill the roster spot vacated by Travis d'Arnaud's placement on the 10-day IL with right foot plantar fasciitis. Martínez made his MLB debut as a defensive replacement in the 8th inning against Toronto. He is a former Yankees international signing (2018) who climbed through the minors with declining offensive production but has been consistently praised for his defensive skills, strong arm, and game-calling ability. At Triple-A Salt Lake this season, he posted a .212/.307/.424 line with 4 HRs in 20 games while striking out at a 34.7% clip. He will share catching duties with Sebastián Rivero while the Angels' primary catchers (Logan O'Hoppe and Travis d'Arnaud) recover from injuries.
