Scouting Report: Tom Murphy

Chicago Cubs | C

C

Overall

IL-60

Summary

Sean Murphy, 31-year-old Braves catcher, suffered a fractured left middle finger on May 11, 2026, during a catcher's interference play when Dodgers batter Hyeseong Kim's bat clipped Murphy's glove. Manager Walt Weiss announced Murphy will miss at least eight weeks, extending his absence into July and potentially beyond the All-Star break. This injury comes just four games into Murphy's 2026 season after he spent the first month-plus rehabbing from hip surgery that required surgery in September 2025. Murphy was 1-for-14 in his four games back before the injury. The Braves signed Sandy León to replace him and optioned Jim Jarvis while selecting José Azócar.

Strengths

  • Veteran catcher with 8 professional seasons
  • Signed 6-year, $73M extension with Braves in 2022
