Chicago Cubs | 3B

Overall

day-to-day

Summary

Peyton Gray, Rangers rookie pitcher, exited Thursday's game vs. Yankees after taking a line drive off his right wrist in the 8th inning. X-rays showed no fracture, but he sustained a large welt and bloody abrasion. Prior to the injury, Gray's impressive 18-inning scoreless streak (including 12 innings in Triple-A) ended in the 7th when he allowed a pair of two-out hits and a run. Gray is a 30-year-old journeyman who went undrafted and persevered through multiple releases and independent ball before signing with Texas. He made his MLB debut on April 23 and did not allow a run in his first four appearances, striking out Pirates rookie Konnor Griffin in his debut. His 92 mph fastball and developing changeup have shown promise despite modest velocity.

Strengths

  • Impressive 18-inning scoreless streak to start 2026 season
  • Perseverance and determination - overcame being undrafted and multiple releases
