Scouting Report: Roman Quinn
Chicago Cubs | CF
Overall
Summary
Roman Anthony, 22-year-old Red Sox outfielder, suffered a right wrist sprain (sprained ligament under right ring finger) during an at-bat in Detroit on May 4, 2026. Placed on 10-day IL on May 9. As of mid-May, Anthony has progressed from wearing a splint/brace to receiving a cortisone shot and beginning baseball activities including throwing. However, he has not yet swung a bat since the injury. The primary concern is grip strength recovery needed for hitting. Red Sox remain optimistic about a relatively quick return, though he was unlikely to return when first eligible on May 17. Anthony is showing positive signs in rehab with improved throwing mechanics and pain reduction. Offensively, Anthony has struggled in 2026 with a .229/.354/.321 line compared to his impressive .292/.396/.463 rookie season in 2025. However, underlying metrics show elite bat speed and exit velocity, with the primary issue being a decrease in pulled air contact percentage rather than fundamental skill decline.
Strengths
- Elite bat speed and exit velocity metrics
- Strong throwing mechanics during rehab
