Scouting Report: Matthew Merrill
Chicago Cubs | RP
Overall
Summary
Jackson Merrill, 23-year-old Padres center fielder, is struggling significantly in his third season after an electric rookie campaign in 2024 that earned him All-Star selection and Silver Slugger honors. Through 41 appearances, he has posted career-low numbers: .215 batting average, .287 on-base percentage, .629 OPS, 4 home runs, and 18 RBIs. Despite strong defensive play and 8 stolen bases without being caught, his offensive production has been troubling for a player signed to a 10-year, $156 million extension. He was given a day off before the Brewers game (non-injury related) as a potential reset. Recent reports show some improvement with an 8-for-17 (.471) stretch over four May contests, but overall season performance remains well below expectations.
Strengths
- Elite defensive skills in center field
