Chicago Cubs | 1B

day-to-day

Summary

Matt Mervis, 28-year-old first baseman, has signed with the Algodoneros de Unión Laguna of the Mexican League after struggling in MLB. The former Cubs prospect made his big league debut in 2023 but has been plagued by elevated strikeout rates (30% K-rate in Triple-A 2024). After appearing in only 9 MLB games in 2024, he was traded to Miami for the 2025 season where he served as Opening Day first baseman. Despite a brief power surge in mid-April (6 HRs through April 16), Mervis slumped significantly, finishing May with a .175/.254/.383 line before being waived. Subsequent minor league contracts with Arizona and Washington failed to result in MLB opportunities. He went 0-4 with three strikeouts in his Mexican League debut.

Strengths

  • 36 home runs across three minor league levels in 2022 demonstrates power potential
  • Brief power surge in April 2025 with 6 home runs through April 16
