Scouting Report: José Castillo
Chicago Cubs | RP
Overall
Summary
José Caballero, Yankees shortstop, suffered a right middle finger fracture on May 12, 2026 while diving back to first base against the Brewers. He was placed on the 10-day IL with an expected return around May 21. Caballero indicated he won't throw for 5-7 days but can field and bend his finger. Manager Aaron Boone promised him the starting SS role upon return. Prior to injury, Caballero was performing well with a .316 average, .896 OPS, 4 HRs and 8 steals over his last 22 games, though underlying metrics don't fully support the offensive surge. He leads the AL in stolen bases with 13 through early May after leading MLB with 49 steals in 2025.
