Scouting Report: Holden Laws
Chicago Cubs | SP
Overall
Summary
Clay Holmes, a 33-year-old right-handed pitcher for the New York Mets, suffered a fractured right fibula after being struck by a 111 mph line drive off the bat of Yankees outfielder Spencer Jones on May 16, 2026. Holmes was placed on the 15-day Injured List. MRI and X-ray confirmed the fracture, and surgery is not required. Holmes is expected to need 6-8 weeks to heal, followed by an additional 4-6 week ramp-up period similar to Spring Training. Mets manager Carlos Mendoza expressed optimism that Holmes will return to pitch in August. Holmes was performing well before the injury with a 4-4 record and 2.39 ERA in 2026 after signing a $38 million, three-year deal with the Mets prior to the season.
Strengths
