Scouting Report: Edwin Escobar

Chicago Cubs | RP

Overall

IL-60

Summary

Edwin Díaz, a three-time All-Star closer signed to a three-year, $69 million deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers in December 2025, was transferred to the 60-day injured list on May 10, 2026. He underwent arthroscopic surgery on April 22 to remove loose bodies from his right elbow after initially being placed on the 15-day IL on April 20. Díaz's 2026 debut season was disastrous, posting a 10.50 ERA across seven appearances before the injury, including a particularly poor outing on April 20 against Colorado where he allowed three runs without recording an out. He is not eligible to return until at least June 19, with the earliest realistic return date expected to be after the All-Star break in mid-July. The Dodgers acquired Díaz specifically to address bullpen fragility but instead face significant uncertainty regarding his availability and performance.

Strengths

  • Three-time All-Star closer with proven track record
  • Expected to begin throwing catch later in May once stitches are removed
