Scouting Report: Mason Barnett
Athletics | SP
Overall
Summary
Mason Barnett, 25-year-old right-handed pitcher and Athletics No. 17 prospect, is battling his way back to the majors after being optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas. At Triple-A, Barnett has posted a 2-0 record with a 3.07 ERA and 1.27 WHIP over 29.1 innings with 32 strikeouts. He was recalled to the Athletics on May 13 to replace injured Brooks Kriske and pitched two shutout innings in his lone MLB appearance this season. Barnett delivered a strong performance on May 9 with six strikeouts over six shutout innings against St. Paul Saints. He was subsequently optioned back to Las Vegas on May 15 to make room for newly acquired Jose Suarez, but remains a viable option for future call-ups for spot starts or bullpen depth. Barnett has a strong mentor in Tim Hudson, his former pitching coach at Auburn and Athletics Hall of Famer, who continues to provide guidance and encouragement.
