Scouting Report: Carlos Santana
Arizona Diamondbacks | 1B
Overall
Summary
Carlos Santana, 40-year-old Diamondbacks first baseman and oldest active position player in MLB, suffered a setback in his rehabilitation from a right groin/adductor strain on May 11, 2026. Originally injured on April 5 during a game against Atlanta, Santana was progressing through a Triple-A rehab assignment with the Reno Aces when he re-injured the adductor. Manager Torey Lovullo confirmed the setback, noting Santana had been working hard to return and had recently hit a home run. Prior to the injury, Santana was struggling offensively with a .083 batting average, 2-for-24 record, and no home runs or RBIs in 8 games. His defensive metrics were also negative (-2 DRS, -2 OAA, -2 FRV). During rehab, he went 3-for-25 in seven games before the setback. This is only the fifth IL stint in his 17-year career and is expected to be his longest absence since 2010.
Strengths
- Recently hit a home run during rehab assignment showing swing was coming around
- Only fifth IL stint in 17-year career demonstrates durability
