Scouting Report

Updated May 20, 2026

Cubs right-hander Hunter Harvey suffered a setback in his recovery from triceps inflammation, with an MRI revealing a stress reaction in his triceps area. Harvey has already missed over a month of action since his last game on April 8. He was initially placed on the 15-day IL on April 9 and is expected to be moved to the 60-day IL. Manager Craig Counsell indicated Harvey will be out for at least another month. This continues a troubling pattern for Harvey, whose career has been defined by injuries. In 2025, he missed significant time with a teres major strain and Grade 2 adductor strain. The Cubs signed Harvey to a one-year, $6.5MM free agent deal, but he posted a 6.75 ERA over four innings before the triceps issue emerged.

Strengths

  • + Strong strikeout rate of 27.4% demonstrates quality stuff
  • + Low walk rate of 6.5% shows good control
  • + 161.1 innings of productive pitching in recent years

Weaknesses

  • - Career plagued by injuries - triceps stress reaction is latest setback
  • - Already missed over one month of 2026 season
  • - Expected to miss at least another month minimum
  • - Likely to be moved to 60-day IL
  • - Posted poor 6.75 ERA in limited 2026 action (4 IP)
  • - History of multiple injuries: teres major strain, Grade 2 adductor strain in 2025
  • - Only 189 innings over 186 games since 2019 debut due to injury issues
  • - Durability concerns make him unreliable investment

Injury Status: IL-60
