Updated May 19, 2026
Carlos Santana, 40-year-old first baseman for the Arizona Diamondbacks, suffered a setback in his rehab assignment from a right adductor/groin strain on May 11, 2026. Originally sidelined since April 5 after suffering the initial injury, Santana was progressing through Triple-A Reno rehab (7 games, 3-for-25) when he re-injured the adductor during his seventh rehab game. He felt a twinge in the injured area and was pulled from the game, returning to Arizona for further evaluation. This setback delays his return to the major leagues and extends what is already his longest injury absence since 2010. Prior to the injury, Santana struggled offensively, batting .083 with a .279 OPS in 8 games, and showed poor defensive metrics (-2 DRS, -2 OAA, -2 FRV).
Strengths
- + Hit a home run during rehab assignment showing swing was coming around
- + Veteran presence and experience (17-year career)
- + Signed as free agent to provide solid defense at first base
- + Previous season performance (2025: .219 BA, 11 HR, 54 RBI)
Injury Status: IL-60
