Scouting Report
Updated May 19, 2026
Matthew Boyd, 35-year-old Cubs left-hander, underwent surgery on May 6, 2026 to repair a partial meniscus tear in his left knee suffered while playing with his children. Manager Craig Counsell expects Boyd to miss approximately 6 weeks. Boyd was placed on the 15-day injured list retroactive to May 4. His return timeline is uncertain, with best-case scenario being after the All-Star break in mid-July. The Cubs' rotation is already depleted with Cade Horton (elbow, season-ending), Justin Steele (elbow, expected back second half), and Jordan Wicks (elbow) also on the injured list. Trent Thornton was selected to replace Boyd on the roster.

- - Age (35 years old) may complicate recovery
- - Significant time away from throwing activities required
- - Cubs rotation already decimated by injuries

- - May not return until after All-Star break (mid-July)
- - Record before injury was 2-1 with 6.00 ERA
Injury Status: IL-15
