Scouting Report

Updated May 19, 2026

Brendan Donovan, All-Star third baseman and key offseason acquisition for the Seattle Mariners, has been activated from the 10-day injured list after suffering a left groin strain on April 17. The injury was connected to sports hernia surgery he underwent in October 2025. Donovan was further complicated by a hip injury sustained on March 28 when he made a sliding catch against Cleveland. He completed a rehab assignment with Double-A Arkansas, going 1-for-3 with a double, RBI, and two walks as designated hitter. Before the injury, Donovan was hitting .304 with a .437 OBP, .518 SLG, .954 OPS, 3 home runs, 3 doubles, and 9 walks in 18 games. He returned to the Mariners lineup at third base and leadoff spot against the White Sox on Friday.

Strengths

  • + Excellent pre-injury offensive performance (.304 BA, .954 OPS)
  • + Strong plate discipline with 9 walks in 18 games
  • + Successful rehab assignment with quality at-bats
  • + Gold Glove-caliber defender returning to primary position
  • + Manager expressed confidence in his return
  • + Felt good physically during rehab games
  • + Key offensive piece for Mariners lineup

Weaknesses

  • - Recent left groin strain requiring IL placement
  • - Ongoing residual effects from sports hernia surgery
  • - Hip injury from early-season sliding catch complication
  • - Limited rehab games due to weather postponement
  • - Still learning recovery protocols post-surgery
  • - Potential for re-injury given core/hip sensitivity

Injury Status: day-to-day
