Scouting Report
Updated May 19, 2026
José Berríos has been dealing with persistent elbow issues since late 2025. He was diagnosed with a stress fracture in his throwing elbow during World Baseball Classic intake physicals in March 2026, which flared up again during a minor league rehab stint. Recent MRI revealed possible loose bodies in addition to the stress fracture. Manager John Schneider indicated surgery is on the table. Berríos has shown decreased velocity (down ~3 mph) and increased pain during rehab outings, allowing 17 earned runs in 14.1 innings. No ligament damage is believed to be present, but the timeline for recovery remains uncertain given the range of outcomes for loose body surgery (ranging from avoiding IL to 60-day IL placement).
Strengths
- + No ligament damage believed to be present
