Scouting Report

Updated May 19, 2026

Gavin Lux has been pulled off his rehab assignment by the Tampa Bay Rays due to a left shoulder injury. He will undergo imaging later in the week and is expected to be out "for the foreseeable future." This is the third injury setback for Lux in recent months, following oblique discomfort in Spring Training, a right shoulder impingement in mid-March, and a left ankle tweak in April. Lux has yet to make his MLB debut with the Rays after being acquired from the Reds in the offseason as their intended primary second baseman. He has appeared in 21 Triple-A games, hitting .200 with 1 HR across 90 plate appearances with 20 walks and 23 strikeouts. The timing is particularly unfortunate as Lux will be a first-time free agent next winter and was already considered a reclamation pickup after being league average the past two seasons.

Strengths

  • + Acquired by Rays as intended primary second baseman
  • + League average hitter over past two seasons
  • + Opportunity for fresh start with new organization

Weaknesses

  • - Multiple injury setbacks in short timeframe (oblique, right shoulder impingement, left ankle, now left shoulder)
  • - Has not made MLB debut with Rays
  • - Poor Triple-A performance (.200 BA, 1 HR in 21 games)
  • - High strikeout rate (23 K in 90 PA)
  • - Out of action for foreseeable future
  • - Ill timing with upcoming free agency
  • - History of being moved between positions (DH/LF with Reds rather than 2B)

Injury Status: IL-60
